EIU Biological Sciences alum, faculty earn recognition for educational achievement, community impact

(Charleston, IL) — Eastern Illinois University’s Department of Biological Sciences has announced recent awards and recognitions earned by alums and faculty members.

Nancy Elwess (’76) is an EIU Biology graduate who will receive a Distinguished Educator Award at the department’s 51st Annual Scholarship and Recognition Banquet Friday, May 2. Elwess had previously earned a Presidential Excellence Award in STEM Mentoring in 2010, where she attended a ceremony at the White House with other award-winning peers. Elwess is a Molecular Biologist who retired from a faculty position at the State University of New York as a Teaching Professor.

Additionally, EIU professor Britto Nathan, Ph.D., and emeritus faculty Bryan Miller, Ph.D., will receive a Community Impact Award at the same 51st Annual Scholarship and Recognition Banquet. According to an email from the Department announcing their accomplishments, Drs. Nathan and Miller are renowned for having assisted in the academic preparation of many physicians in and around Eastern Illinois University’s primary service area.

“EIU’s Biological Sciences Department is celebrated for producing capable, ambitious Âé¶¹´«Ã½ and is led by highly qualified and student-centered faculty,” said Dr. Thomas Canam, Chair and Professor of the department. “Our focus on student accomplishment translates to an excellent education and a broad community impact. The University community can be proud of these high achievers and their commitments to education and service.”

All recipients will be recognized at a small, on-campus banquet May 2.
